Ring 211 February 2010 Report
Gil Scott
presented our February workshop. It was an extension on a previous
workshop. His focus was for magicians to take a magic trick, analyze it,
and make it better. He gave us examples of such a development by
performing The Parade of Kings, to Trost's The Deuce You Say, to Maven's
Bee Wave. He pointed out the the difference of the "kicker" ending each
of these tricks. He shared with us his variation on Bee Wave using the
choice of a whole deck selection with use of an envelope and then using
a z-fold wallet. He also presented his version using larger jumbo cards
and a large envelope and how to make the envelope to appear empty with
use of a "window." He closed his workshop having Rick Merrill join him
in performing Twisted Sister using two large packets of playing cards.
Tonight was
Mentalism Night with Gil Scott as the chairperson. I opened the show
with a book test using the roll of two dice and a pocket dictionary
(Elmwood Magic). MagicBob Zoerman revealed the prediction of a person's
chosen card by way of a tattoo on his arm. The tattoo being produced by
our own Raven Keckler. Dave Bogdan attempted to detect if a spectator's
ring was made of real gold by putting it through a grinder box. Oops. To
our relief, it was found completely unharmed with a newly shine from
inside a tea bag. Dennis Favreau presented Zodiac Code (Aldo & Rachel
Colombini), then mentally matched a two digit number between 1 and 100,
and only to repeat the revelation for a five digit number between 1 and
100,000. Glenn Eberhardt had four court cards named and one chosen. He
used himself as a medium to have Jesse Shira reveal the card chosen.
Brad Lancaster had SuZie Zoerman think of a person and he revealed her
thought. Brian Vander Kolk had a random number of matches taken out of a
match booklet along with a selected ESP card symbol chosen. More matches
were taken out and used as a magic number for the dealing of the ESP
cards to the predicted symbol which was referred to a note matching the
number of matches remaining in the packet. Rick Merrill closed the show
by performing Psyching You Out (Tom Craven) with his comic wit. A dollar
bill was placed in one of three purses and correctly chosen by the
spectator but to our surprise we were "psyched" when the other two
purses had each a one hundred dollar bill.
Another night of
magic and fun. We thank Gil for the workshop and program as well as our
performers.
